I have been reading a lot of stuff with the economy and President Obama's interactions and policies. I am intrigued--wondering what he really can do. I saw this today and wondered how he will be able to accomplish this. It seems like if it could be done in four years someone should have done it a long time ago. I am interested to see his plan for this.

Interesting. I think it is good to remember that intentions are good, and I think we need a good start, I think that that addressing the problems and not just the deficit is a great idea. I think people are going to think that if he doesn't fix the problem in 4 years he is a failure, and I think the thing to realize that no one could fix the problems in 4 years, (there are other problems to work on also) but even to institute some practices that slow down the hole digging, and at the same time work on lessening the deficit would be the thing to do. It's going to take a while....
I agree with Jelena.
Your question of, If this could be done in 4 years, why wasn't it done earlier?" relies on the difference of policy and priority to answer.
Remember the Obama administration is counting on spending pointedly less in Iraq to meet this goal (combined with ridding the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and more efficient government processes and bureaucracy).
For any of this to work, all levels of government will have to watch how the spend money. The American public will also need to wake up out of the state of indifference it has cuddled up to. We need to support programs that work, volunteer, not rely on government to fix our problems, and not settle with poor performance.
If Obama can do some of the things he is trying/promising (be that as it may) to do, I may turn out to be a supporter after all...
